The Laundry's History

A country lane with old flint buildings

The Laundry holiday destination was created in 2012 when the Hungry Monk restaurant closed. The building which now forms the Laundry had previously been the office and laundry for the Hungry Monk restaurant. The Hungry Monk restaurant is most famous for having invented the Banoffee Pie, a now world famous recipe served in thousands of cafes and restaurants across the globe.

The first records for a building on this site relate to a shed which was constructed around about the turn of the 19th century.

Jevington village dates back to Neolithic times. Evidence of settlers living in the area can be found in the earth works that litter the surrounding hills. During the reign of Alfred the Great the village became part of a network of villages in the area which grew food to supply the great port of Exceat. At one time this now hidden village generated more revenue than any other port in the area. King Alfred has a manor house at nearby West Dean.

The village church was built with a fortified tower in around 900 AD as safe refuge against Vikings who, from time to time came raiding.

A monastery is known to have been present in Jevington in 1344 but was ransacked by Henry viii during the dissolution of the monasteries.

In the late 18th century the hills around Jevington were a favourite haunt of smugglers. The eight Bells pub, just 200 metres from the Laundry was frequented by smugglers who operated at beautiful Birling Gap and Crow Link just a couple of miles from Jevington. One time Inn Keeper, James Pettit, leader of a notorious smuggling gang managed to escape capture by armed constables by dressing as a woman and feigning hysteria.

Jevington is now a peaceful place to spend time enjoying the beautiful countryside and a huge number of historic and cultural attractions.
